Painting Process This is a step by step view of one of my mixed media custom cat portraits. I have included notes about each step.
The PhotosHere are two of the original photos of Frankie and Howard, two Rainbow Bridge kitties who are much loved and missed by their mama. She wanted me to create a tribute painting showing them both together as peaceful angels.

The Rough SketchUsing regular drawing paper, I sketch out the layout for the painting using a drawing pencil. Once the layout is the way I want it I lightly trace the sketch onto the watercolor paper.

Ink and Colored Pencil DetailsI ink the outlines using different sized archival quality pens. I also add in some colored pencil details in areas that won't be painted.

The BackgroundI wet the entire background with water. Then I started applying acrylic washes of the different pastel colors blending the edges of each color together. Once dry I painted the clouds with white acrylic paint.

The CatsFor the cats I started applying acrylic washes to create their fur markings and also the highlights and lowlights on their bodies and wings.

The Completed Painting In this final step I add more of everything to bring out the details. I go back over some of the pen work. I add more colored pencil highlights and lowlights where needed. I also added some sparkely paint to their halos, silvery marks on their wings and opal highlights on the clouds. To me this give the painting a more heavenly feel.
